Items You Should Never Put in the Dishwasher

Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air

"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Ah, the dishwasher - it can be your best friend or worst nightmare. We all know the dishwasher can be a huge time saver, especially when cooking a big dinner or entertaining during the holiday season. However, tossing just any item in your dishwasher can cause you a headache, time, and a lot of money if you aren't mindful about what you're putting in.

Below is a list of a few items that should never see the inside of your dishwasher!

Cast Iron and Enameled Pots and Pans: Although many labels on these pots and pans may say 'dishwasher safe', after several washes the enamel will dull and chips can occur. (This includes cast iron colanders, as well!)

Fancy Knives: Good chefs knives aren't cheap, so please, keep them out of our dishwasher! The hot temperature of the water can warp and damage the metal.

Cast-Iron Pans or Skillets: Cast-iron products are usually finished with an oil that prevents the iron from rusting over time. Placing your cast-iron pan collection in your machine will cause the special oil  to wash away after time.

Insulated Travel Mugs and Cups: As much as insulated travel mugs come in hand when you're on the go, you will be sorry if you put them in your dishwasher even if they're labeled dishwasher safe. Many of these cups have a space between layers that water can get trapped in, causing a nasty odor that can make your coffee taste bitter.

Cutting Boards: The hot water in your machine can cause various types of cutting boards to warp and crack. This is another item that should be added to your "wash by hand" collection!

Should any of these items cause your dishwasher any trouble, you can always call on your friends here at Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air to come over and check it out twenty four hours a day, seven days a week! If you have any questions about your dishwasher, give us a call! We'd be happy to help. To learn more about us, visit www.mitchwrightair.com.

How To Avoid Holiday Plumbing Issues

Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air
www.MitchWrightAir.com
(662) 349-3547
"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

As you're putting the final touches on your dinner menu, guest list, and last minute gifts for your upcoming holiday party, we're sure the last thing on your mind is your plumbing system. However, a clogged sink or toilet is the last thing you need to worry about while entertaining a house full of people.

To avoid a holiday plumbing nightmare like this, check out what you should keep in mind during your holiday entertaining below.

Keep toys away from the toilet. We know this may sound crazy, however, it's not uncommon for small toys to be accidentally flushed down the toilet or dropped in the garbage disposal. Beware of the little ones on the lose with small toys and try to keep them away from your plumbing systems.

Scrape Dishes Well. Holiday dinners are usually extravagant and plates are filled to the max. When your guest are done eating, be sure to scrape off plates as best as possible to avoid food from clogging the drain when dishes are being rinsed.

Prepare. If you notice in the next few days that your kitchen sink isn't draining properly, or your toilet isn't flushing efficiently, be proactive and call your plumber now! Taking these measures before you have guests over can save you a huge headache on the day of your party.

On behalf of all of us here at Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season. If you find yourself in the face of a plumbing nightmare at your holiday party, don't worry, your friends at Mitch Wright are always here to help! We can be reached at anytime by calling (662) 349-3547.

How To Avoid Plumbing Issues

Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air
www.MitchWrightAir.com
(662) 349-3547
"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Plumbers get calls everyday to repair everything from drain back ups to a pipe springing a leak, but they even get calls to fix issues that are easily avoidable. Below are a few things you shouldn't do to avoid having the plumber on speed dial.

Treating the garbage disposal like a trash can. This is one of the most popular incidents that plumbers get called over for. Items such as bones, rinds and grease should be kept out of your disposal. For a complete list of garbage disposal dont's, click here.

Flushing hosehold items down the toilet. This is another common problem that the handy dandy plumber gets calls for. Items such as tweezers and small toys should never be flushed down the toilet (no matter how small). This causes them to get trapped or forced down the sewer line which can cause even bigger problems.

Cranking on a faucet handle. This is something we are all guilty of! When the sink or shower continues to drip once it's been turned off, it is in our nature to push or pull it really hard to try and get it to stop. Pressing to hard on the handle can cause it to break without solving the drip!

Plumbing issues happen, no matter how hard we try to avoid them. If you have a plumbing issue in your home, we encourage you to contact Mitch Wright Plumbing, Heating and Air. One of our friendly professionals will be over in no time to get the issue fixed for you! To learn more, visit www.mitchwrightair.com.

How To Handle a Plumbing Emergency

Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air
www.MitchWrightAir.com
(662) 349-3547
"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Although no type of emergency is a good one, plumbing emergencies can be stressful and troublesome. Whether you come home to find a toilet that's overflowed or a pipe that burst, there are a few steps you can take right away before calling Mitch Wright Plumbing to come to your rescue!

Turn off the water
The number one most important thing you should know about your plumbing system is where to shut off the water. The main valve is usually located in the basement of your home or outside.

Turn off individual appliance valves
In the case of an emergency, the most ideal thing to do would be to turn off the water supply to pipe/appliance that caused the emergency. Each fixture in your home should have it's one shutoff valve. Try to familiarize yourself with where the valves are located before a plumbing nightmare arises.

Remove electronics or other valuables
Try and salvage as many items as you can as quickly as possible, especially electronics. Move them to a dry area and pat them down with a towel or cloth. If a carpet or floor was affected by the emergency, let them air dry and see how they're holding up a day or two later. They may need to be discarded or replaced depending on how much water they were exposed to.

Clean up the mess
Once you've got the emergency under control, try and keep the area clean and contained to just one room. Soak up the water using towels or old sheets.

Call Mitch Wright
Ah, save the best for last! No matter what type of plumbing emergency you have on your hands, it's important to call us as soon as possible. You may have things under control, but it's likely that things will need to be checked out by a professional to make sure matters don't get worse.

If you're located in Memphis, Germantown, Shelby County TN, Southaven, Olive Branch, Hernando, Horn Lake or Desoto County, we hope that you will call on Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating & Air should a plumbing emergency arise. We are located in Southaven and are licensed for plumbing, mechanical, and gas in both Mississippi and Tennessee! For more information, visit www.mitchwrightair.com.

"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Your heating systems are an important part of winter so it is crucial to make sure your furnace is ready to fight off the upcoming cold weather! Wondering where to start? Time, convenience, and efficiency are all important aspects that are taken into consideration when planning your next scheduled service or tune up.

Convenience and timing go hand in hand when it comes to checking out your furnace. The perfect time to get it serviced is before the winter season. Systems are more than likely to break down when they are used regularly (like your furnace in the cold months), and many people forget that until it's too late. By waiting until the middle of winter to get your system checked, the demand on service professionals near your you will rise, and you may not be able to get an appointment within that same day!

Efficiency is the next aspect to consider when scheduling your service and tune up for your heating system. By getting your furnace checked in the fall, the more likely that it will be ready to fight against the cold. Scheduled maintenance increases the longevity of your system and our professionals will check and make sure that your system will continue to run smoothly throughout the winter months!

Dealing with a break down in the middle of winter is certainly not ideal. Fall tune ups and scheduled service are the perfect way to bring you peace of mind during the most stressful months of the year. Annual inspections and servicing your heating system is highly recommended because it not only helps prolong the life of your system, but it also can save you money by reducing energy bills.

While scheduling your winter getaways and family gatherings, don't forget to put Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air on your schedule! We will stop over and make sure your home is ready to go for winter! For more information, visit www.mitchwrightair.com.

"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Hello, October!  Now that fall is in full swing, it's time to make sure that your outdoor plumbing is prepared for the new season.  These tips will help protect your outdoor plumbing through the autumn months!

Fall Plumbing Tips:
  • Check Your Sump Pump - Fall can be a rainy season.  Check your sump pump to make sure that it's working properly.  This will help prevent flooding and ensure that water is directed away from your home.
  • Keep Your Gutters Clear - With the weather cooling down, now is the perfect time to check your home gutters.  Remove any debris that may have gotten trapped there over the summer months.  This will help improve water drainage away from your home.
  • Inspect Your Sewer Drain - The heavy rains that are common during hurricane season can also cause your sewer line to back up.  We offer sewer line repair and replacement services for those that have any problems with their systems, but we recommend inspecting them first to prevent problems before they occur!
Do you have any questions about how to protect your outdoor plumbing this Fall?  Contact our professional technicians at (662) 349-3547. You an also learn more about our services and service areas by visiting www.mitchwrightair.com.

Plumbing Myths

Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air
www.MitchWrightAir.com
(662) 349-3547
"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Everything you read and hear is not always true. This goes for pretty much everything, including plumbing. There’s a lot of things you can do to your plumbing to help maintain it, but not everything works or is what it seems. Here’s a couple of debunked plumbing myths that can finally be put to bed!

Myth: Lemon Peels Clean Your Garbage Disposal
Fact: Putting lemon peels down your garbage disposal will make your drain smell better, but sadly it won’t clean the blades. To clean the blades of a garbage disposal, disconnect its power and spray a cleaning solution into the disposal. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes and then proceed with scrubbing the blades with a brush.

Myth: Run Water While Using the Garbage Disposal to Help Push Waste Down
Fact: Contrary to what most people think, you can’t put anything you want into your garbage disposal as long as you run the water. Most items do not belong in the disposal, such as banana peels and eggshells. Running water or not, putting items like these down the garbage disposal can damage it. To make sure thick foods go down the disposal smoothly, break them up in water before putting them down the drain.

Myth: Everything Is Going Down the Drain, It Isn't Clogged
Fact: Your garbage disposal can still operate while a clog is beginning to form. Just because water is moving downwards into the drain, doesn’t mean there isn’t a clog.  For a warning sign that your drain or disposal is clogging, look for waste fragments on the discharge pipe. If the disposal is moving slowly than you may have a clog on your hands. Do not use your disposal until the drain is unclogged.

Myth: You Can Clean Plumbing Fixtures With Hand Soap
Fact: Cleaning plumbing fixtures with hand soap may not kill all of the germs inhabiting them. For instance, toilet bowls need to be cleaned with a quality disinfectant. The surface of other plumbing fixtures can also be damaged by hand soap. Anything made from brass, should be cleaned with a sliced lemon and baking soda solution for a light and gentle cleaning.

Now that you know some of the facts about plumbing maintenance, you can move ahead with some confidence. If you have any major maintenance that needs to be done to your plumbing, you can rely on Mitch Wright Plumbing, Heating & Air to help you out! To schedule an appointment or to ask any questions, please call (662) 349-3547 today!

How to Prevent a Clogged Kitchen Sink

Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air
www.MitchWrightAir.com
(662) 349-3547
"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

The kitchen sink swallows many different types of liquids and foods in its lifetime. Its drain pipes cannot always handle these various liquids and can eventually clog up. A clogged drain can lead to foul odors and slow drain times. Learn how you can prevent build up in your drain pipes before they become clogged.

Throw It Out - Grease, coffee grounds, fat trimmings, etc. should always be thrown into the trash. Pouring these down your drain could cause serious blockage over time, even with a garbage disposal unit attached. For added insurance, place a sink strainer over the drain to catch any food or solids from going into the drainpipe.

Surge of Water - To clean your drainpipes using only water, plug the drain using the stopper and fill the sink with water. Then unplug the drain and allow the water to flush down the drainpipe. The force of the water should wash away some buildup in the pipes. For those without a stopper, pour a few cups of boiling water down the drain. Do either one of these at least once a week.

Green Cleaners - For those who don’t want to use harsh chemicals in their sink, environmentally friendly options are available. Pour a half cup of baking soda down your drain, followed by a half cup of vinegar. Cover the drain for five minutes and let the chemical reaction clean your drain for you. Afterwards, pour several cups of boiling water down the drain to wash away the solution. This method is especially effective in treating a sink that starts to give off a foul odor.

Methods like these can help prevent your kitchen sink’s drain pipes from becoming clogged. For those whose kitchen sinks are too far gone for prevention methods, rely on the professionals at Mitch Wright Plumbing, Heating and Air! With over 30 years experience and a 9-year ranking as “Best of the Best” in Desoto County, Mitch Wright Plumbing, Heating and Air is here to help with all of your drain and kitchen sink needs. Handling Plumbing Leaks

Mitch Wright Plumbing Heating and Air
www.MitchWrightAir.com
(662) 349-3547
"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Stumbling upon a leaking pipe can be one of the most frustrating things a homeowner can encounter. A leaking pipe can lower water pressure, cause water damage, and most importantly it can waste your money! All of the extra water leaking out is burining a hole in your pocket. Luckily, there are a few ways to temporarily fix a leaking pipe before calling in the professionals.

Getting to the Point:
For this quick fix, all you’ll need is a pencil and some electricians tape. Take the sharp end of the pencil and place it into the hole. Break off the point of the pencil so it clogs the hole. Then proceed to wrap it tightly in electricians tape. For extra insurance, place some plumbers repair putty over the tape for a more secure patch. Be sure to let the putty dry for at least a half hour before turning the water valve back on.

Clamp it Up:
A piece of rubber and a clamp will do for this quick fix. If you do not have any spare rubber lying around the house, an old inner tube will do the trick. Cut a small piece of the rubber and place it around the leak. Then use a C clamp to clamp the rubber and prevent the water from leaking out. If the rubber does not stay clamped, use a small block of wood to put in-between the rubber and clamp the rubber shut against the wood.

Garden Hose:
Grab yourself some scissors and an old garden hose and start cutting. Cut a piece of garden hose bigger than the hole in the pipe, plus a few extra inches, and place it over the leak. Then slice more of the hose in half to use as a cover for the pipe. To make sure the hose pieces stay secure, use a clamp to keep them in place.

While these quick fixes do work, they are only temporary and will require a proper permanent fix. These tips will allow you to turn the water back on, while you are waiting for the plumber. If you have a leak and want to get your temporary fix turned into a permanent one call on Mitch Wright Plumbing today! We would be more than happy to help! Learn more at www.mitchwrightair.com.

"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

If you're the proud owner of a garbage disposal, it's inevitable that at some point or another, it will get clogged. However, there are a few simple things you can do to try and unclog your system before having to give your friends at Mitch Wright Plumbing a call!

Get a good look. Grab a flashlight and take a good look down the disposal to see if you can pinpoint what is causing the issue.

Kill the power. There should be a electrical power switch located under your sink around the area of hte disposal or on a nearby wall. If not, you may want to consider going to the main panel and turning off the breaker.

Remove visable item. If you can see what's causing the clog, grab a pair of pliers to remove the object. NEVER stick your hand down the disposal!

Get mixing. If you can't see an object that seems to be causing the issue, it could be in the pipes. Pour half a box of baking soda in the side of the sink where the disposal is located and the other half in the other side. Next, pour white vinegar into both sides, but more on the side of the disposal. Let the mixture soak for 30 minutes and then clean with hot water. This may do the trick.

Call the professionals. Can't seem to fix the issues? Thats where Mitch Wright comes in. Give us a call! We will be there in no time to get your garbage disposal running properly.

"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

When your sink or drain backs up, what is the first thing you do? We're going to assume it's head to the supply closet and look for a bottle of Draino or Liquid-Plumr. If that is the case, we can assure you that you're not the only one! However, drain cleaners contain several harsh chemicals that can damage and erode your pipes.

Instead of trying to fix it yourself and perhaps creating more of a mess, it's always best to call in the professionals! That's where we fit in. If you find that your sink or drain is clogged, give Mitch Wright Plumbing a call immediately and we will be over in no time to fix it! We can be reached by calling (662) 349-3547.

"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Would you be surprised to know that indoor air is actually worse for your health than outdoor air? Since most people spend 90% of their time indoors, poor indoor air quality is a big problem. With spring in full swing, you may be knee deep in tissues from your stubborn spring allergies. Improving the indoor air quality can help reduce the effects of spring allergies. Below are some tips that will help you do just that.

Get Rid of Dust Mites
Cleaning your home on a regular basis will keep dust mites at bay. You can achieve this by washing rugs and low pile carpets. Each week, wash bedding and pillows in hot water. Last not certainly not least, you can put plastic coverings on all pillows, mattresses and box springs.

Vacuum Weekly
Dust mites can also be found in carpets. To prevent them from affecting the indoor air quality, be sure to vacuum once or twice a week. For best results, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.

Stop Pollen From Entering Your Home
During the spring,  high concentrations of pollen are in the air. This is usually why people experience allergies in the springtime. You can stop pollen in its tracks by keeping the windows and doors closed.

Spring allergies still got you down? Don't fret. Just turn to Mitch Wright Plumbing, Heating and Air. We offer ultra violet light filtration systems and whole home air filtration systems. Our whole home air filtration system creates an oasis of clean, indoor air in homes. Call 662-349-3547 today to schedule an appointment. We'll help you take a breath of fresh air!
