For added insurance, place a sink strainer over the drain to catch any food or solids from going into the drainpipe.

Surge of Water - To clean your drainpipes using only water, plug the drain using the stopper and fill the sink with water. Then unplug the drain and allow the water to flush down the drainpipe. The force of the water should wash away some buildup in the pipes. For those without a stopper, pour a few cups of boiling water down the drain. Do either one of these at least once a week.

Pour a half cup of baking soda down your drain, followed by a half cup of vinegar. Cover the drain for five minutes and let the chemical reaction clean your drain for you. Afterwards, pour several cups of boiling water down the drain to wash away the solution. This method is especially effective in treating a sink that starts to give off a foul odor.
