Handling Plumbing Leaks

"The Right Prescription for Comfort"

Stumbling upon a leaking pipe can be one of the most frustrating things a homeowner can encounter. A leaking pipe can lower water pressure, cause water damage, and most importantly it can waste your money! All of the extra water leaking out is burining a hole in your pocket. Luckily, there are a few ways to temporarily fix a leaking pipe before calling in the professionals.

Getting to the Point:
For this quick fix, all you’ll need is a pencil and some electricians tape. Take the sharp end of the pencil and place it into the hole. Break off the point of the pencil so it clogs the hole. Then proceed to wrap it tightly in electricians tape. For extra insurance, place some plumbers repair putty over the tape for a more secure patch. Be sure to let the putty dry for at least a half hour before turning the water valve back on.

Clamp it Up:
A piece of rubber and a clamp will do for this quick fix. If you do not have any spare rubber lying around the house, an old inner tube will do the trick. Cut a small piece of the rubber and place it around the leak. Then use a C clamp to clamp the rubber and prevent the water from leaking out. If the rubber does not stay clamped, use a small block of wood to put in-between the rubber and clamp the rubber shut against the wood.

Garden Hose:
Grab yourself some scissors and an old garden hose and start cutting. Cut a piece of garden hose bigger than the hole in the pipe, plus a few extra inches, and place it over the leak. Then slice more of the hose in half to use as a cover for the pipe. To make sure the hose pieces stay secure, use a clamp to keep them in place.

While these quick fixes do work, they are only temporary and will require a proper permanent fix. These tips will allow you to turn the water back on, while you are waiting for the plumber. If you have a leak and want to get your temporary fix turned into a permanent one call on Mitch Wright Plumbing today! We would be more than happy to help! Learn more at www.mitchwrightair.com.
